Post-Session: Sensex slips 167 pts, Nifty ends at 10,981

After trading flat for most part of the session, benchmark indices witnessed sharp decline in the fag-end of the trade on Thursday as investors turned cautious ahead of European Central Bank's (ECB) policy meeting later in the day. It is widely expected that the ECB will deliver stimulus to arrest a slowing global economy.

That apart, investors also await key macro data such as IIP (index of industrial production) numbers for July and retail inflation (CPI) print for August due later in the day.

The 30-share benchmark index closed trading at 37104.28 down by -166.54 points or by -0.45 % and then NSE Nifty was at 10982.8 down by -52.9 points or by -0.48 %. During the day's trade, Sensex touched intraday high of 37435.15 and intraday low of 37048.67 The NSE Nifty touched intraday high of 11081.75 and intraday low of 10964.95.

The top gainers of the BSE Sensex pack were ICICI Bank Ltd. (Rs. 402.75,+2.13%), Sun Pharmaceutical Industries Ltd. (Rs. 427.70,+1.34%), IndusInd Bank Ltd. (Rs. 1389.05,+1.26%), HDFC Bank Ltd. (Rs. 2270.30,+0.95%), State Bank of India (Rs. 286.85,+0.54%), among others. The top losers of the BSE Sensex pack were YES Bank Ltd. (Rs. 67.95,-5.10%), Tata Motors Ltd. (Rs. 58.60,-4.87%), Tata Motors Ltd. (Rs. 127.95,-4.76%), Maruti Suzuki India Ltd. (Rs. 6391.80,-3.13%), Axis Bank Ltd. (Rs. 663.00,-2.74%), among others.

Among the sectors, Bankex index was at 31275.47 up by 59.33 points or by 0.19%. ICICI Bank Ltd. (Rs. 402.75,+2.13%), IndusInd Bank Ltd. (Rs. 1389.05,+1.26%), HDFC Bank Ltd. (Rs. 2270.30,+0.95%), State Bank of India (Rs. 286.85,+0.54%),.

Auto index was at 16345.48 down by -320.35 points or by -1.92%. Tata Motors Ltd. (Rs. 127.95,-4.76%), Bosch Ltd. (Rs. 13788.40,-3.26%), TVS Motor Company Ltd. (Rs. 389.70,-3.25%), Maruti Suzuki India Ltd. (Rs. 6391.80,-3.13%), Cummins India Ltd. (Rs. 568.70,-2.36%),.

The Market breadth, indicating the overall strength of the market, was weak. On BSE out of total shares traded 2835 , shares advanced were 1452 while 1187 shares declined and 196 were unchanged.
