Post Session: Sensex ends 87 pts lower, Nifty holds 11,550

Domestic indices ended Friday's choppy session in the negative territory as traders turned cautious ahead of Infosys' earnings and economic data due later today. D-street was dragged lower by index heavyweights like HDFC Bank, Axis Bank, Larsen & Toubro, and Bajaj Finance. India's retail inflation likely reached an eight-month high in June on rising food prices but stayed under the Reserve Bank of India's medium-term target of 4 per cent for an eleventh straight month, a Reuters poll predicted.

On the global front, Asian shares closed mixed as investors awaited China's macroeconomic data, while the European shares were currently trading higher. MSCI's broadest index of Asia-Pacific shares outside Japan was down 0.1 per cent

The 30-share benchmark index ended at 38736.23 down by 86.88 points or by 0.22 per cent, while the NSE Nifty was at 11552.5 down by 30.4 points or by 0.26 per cent. During the day’s trade, Sensex touched intraday high of 39021.84 and intraday low of 38684.85 The NSE Nifty touched intraday high of 11639.55 and intraday low of 11538.6.

The top gainers of the BSE Sensex pack were Vedanta Ltd. (Rs. 167.70,+2.44%), Sun Pharmaceutical Industries Ltd. (Rs. 407.70,+2.41%), Tata Steel Ltd. (Rs. 472.60,+2.34%), Asian Paints Ltd. (Rs. 1360.00,+2.05%), Hero MotoCorp Ltd. (Rs. 2558.50,+2.04%), among others.

The top losers of the BSE Sensex pack were Bajaj Finance Ltd. (Rs. 3377.75,-2.08%), Oil And Natural Gas Corporation Ltd. (Rs. 149.85,-2.06%), IndusInd Bank Ltd. (Rs. 1510.35,-1.98%), Power Grid Corporation of India Ltd. (Rs. 204.80,-1.87%), Larsen & Toubro Ltd. (Rs. 1467.30,-1.85%), among others.

Among the sectors, Metal index was at 10540.26 up by 94.94 points or by 0.91%. Jindal Steel & Power Ltd. (Rs. 139.20,+3.92%), Vedanta Ltd. (Rs. 167.70,+2.44%), Tata Steel Ltd. (Rs. 472.60,+2.34%), NMDC Ltd. (Rs. 111.80,+1.59%), National Aluminium Company Ltd. (Rs. 47.35,+1.18%),.

On the flip side, CGS index was at 18653.31 down by -230.73 points or by -1.22%. Sadbhav Engineering Ltd. (Rs. 183.85,-3.67%), Lakshmi Machine Works Ltd. (Rs. 4664.60,-2.42%), Larsen & Toubro Ltd. The Market breadth, indicating the overall strength of the market, was weak. On BSE out of total shares traded 2809 , shares advanced were 1303 while 1335 shares declined and 171 were unchanged.
