Post Session: Sensex surges 278 pts; IT, financial stocks shine

The buying spree in the last hour pulled domestic benchmark indices more than one per cent high propelled mainly by gains in IT and financial stocks. Except pharma, all other sectoral indices ended higher led by IT, metal, energy, bank, auto, FMCG and infra. Foreign institutional investors (FIIs) net sold shares worth Rs 1,142.44 crore on Wednesday, while domestic institutional investors (DIIs) purchased equities to the tune of Rs 671.77 crore, provisional data available with stock exchanges showed. Bourses in China, Japan and Korea ended on a mixed note after US slapped sanctions on Chinese telecom major Huawei. European stocks opened in the red. Meanwhile, the Indian rupee appreciated by 27 paise to 70.07 against the US dollar intra-day. Global oil benchmark Brent crude was trading 0.56 per cent higher at USD 72.17 per barrel. Among individual stocks, Bajaj Finance was the biggest gainer spurting 3.64 per cent, after the company reported a jump of 50 per cent in standalone net profit at Rs 1,114 crore for the March quarter.

The 30-share index settled at 37393.48 up by 278.6 points or by 0.75 per cent and then NSE Nifty was at 11257.1 up by 100.1 points or by 0.9 per cent. The BSE Sensex touched intraday high of 37518.94 and intraday low of 37052.3 The NSE Nifty touched intraday high of 11281.55 and intraday low of 11143.35.

The top gainers of the BSE Sensex were Bajaj Finance Ltd. (Rs. 3111.80,+3.64%), Tata Motors Ltd. (Rs. 175.50,+3.48%), Tata Motors Ltd. (Rs. 83.05,+2.72%), Infosys Ltd. (Rs. 734.20,+2.47%), Vedanta Ltd. (Rs. 163.15,+2.22%), among others. On the other hand, the top losers of the BSE Sensex were YES Bank Ltd. (Rs. 137.80,-4.07%), Bharti Airtel Ltd. (Rs. 324.80,-1.87%), IndusInd Bank Ltd. (Rs. 1359.20,-1.37%), Coal India Ltd. (Rs. 232.55,-1.29%), ITC Ltd. (Rs. 294.70,-0.81%), among others.

Among sectors, Oil&Gas index was at 14578.51 up by 219.44 points or by 1.53%. Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Ltd. (Rs. 280.30,+4.80%), Bharat Petroleum Corporation Ltd. (Rs. 374.50,+4.36%), Indian Oil Corporation Ltd. (Rs. 150.85,+3.78%), Oil And Natural Gas Corporation Ltd. (Rs. 165.90,+2.00%), Castrol India Ltd. (Rs. 143.00,+1.31%),. On the other hand, HCS index was at 13333.76 down by -16.92 points or by -0.13%. Piramal Enterprises Ltd. (Rs. 2045.75,-4.30%), Wockhardt Ltd. (Rs. 364.40,-3.29%), Aarti Drugs Ltd. (Rs. 585.30,-2.77%), Healthcare Global Enterprises Ltd. (Rs. 189.75,-2.72%), Alkem Laboratories Ltd. (Rs. 1682.90,-2.16%),.

The Market breadth, indicating the overall strength of the market, was weak. On BSE out of total shares traded 2821 , shares advanced were 1247 while 1402 shares declined and 172 were unchanged.
