Post-Session: Sensex tanks over 400 pts on widespread profit booking

Equity benchmark indices Sensex and Nifty buckled under heavy selling pressure to sink below record high levels on Wednesday, tracking deep losses in metal, auto and IT stocks amid widespread profit booking after recent gains Rising uncertainty over interest rate cut by the US Federal Reserve also added to the weak trend in domestic equities, traders said.

The 30-share benchmark index ended at 79924.77 down by -426.87 points or by -0.53 % and then NSE Nifty was at 24324.45 down by -108.75 points or by -0.45 %.

Sensex touched intraday high of 80481.36 and intraday low of 79435.76 The NSE Nifty touched intraday high of 24461.05 and intraday low of 24141.8

The top gainers of the BSE Sensex pack were Asian Paints Ltd. (Rs. 2995.40,+3.10%), Power Grid Corporation of India Ltd. (Rs. 346.10,+1.53%), NTPC Ltd. (Rs. 381.60,+1.22%), Hindustan Unilever Ltd. (Rs. 2610.60,+0.82%), Adani Ports & Special Economic Zone Ltd. (Rs. 1488.45,+0.71%), among others.

The top losers of the BSE Sensex pack were Mahindra & Mahindra Ltd. (Rs. 2732.10,-6.62%), Tata Steel Ltd. (Rs. 168.00,-2.21%), Tata Consultancy Services Ltd. (Rs. 3909.90,-2.05%), HCL Technologies Ltd. (Rs. 1506.65,-1.58%), State Bank of India (Rs. 849.10,-1.38%), among others.

The Market breadth, indicating the overall strength of the market, was weak. On BSE out of total shares traded 4250 , shares advanced were 1465 while 2663 shares declined and 122 were unchanged.
