Post Session: Sensex ends at record high; Nifty tops 11k-mark

Indian benchmarks ended at record closing high on Thursday driven by gains in financial and energy stocks as optimism around corporate earnings and stronger Asian shares boosted sentiment.

Oil-to-telecom conglomerate Reliance Industries jumped 4.42 per cent to hit its all-time closing high, re-entering the USD 100 billion market cap club.

An appreciating rupee, sustained buying by domestic institutional investors (DIIs), fresh foreign capital inflows and encouraging start to the earnings season contributed to the uptrend, brokers said.

The 30-share benchmark index ended at 36548.41 up by 282.48 points or by 0.78 per cent, while the NSE Nifty was at 11023.2 up by 74.9 points or by 0.68 per cent.

During the day’s trade, Sensex touched intraday high of 36699.53 and intraday low of 36422.08 The NSE Nifty touched intraday high of 11078.3 and intraday low of 10999.65.

The top gainers of the BSE Sensex pack were Reliance Industries Ltd. (Rs. 1082.20,+4.42%), Wipro Ltd. (Rs. 279.50,+2.44%), Larsen & Toubro Ltd. (Rs. 1299.75,+1.94%), Housing Development Finance Corporation Ltd. (Rs. 1961.75,+1.74%), State Bank of India (Rs. 262.75,+1.49%), among others.

The top losers of the BSE Sensex pack were Vedanta Ltd. (Rs. 211.35,-3.05%), Infosys Ltd. (Rs. 1294.60,-1.95%), Tata Motors Ltd. (Rs. 152.30,-1.68%), Bajaj Auto Ltd. (Rs. 3101.90,-1.66%), Mahindra & Mahindra Ltd. (Rs. 917.55,-1.40%), among others.

Among the sectors, Oil&Gas index was at 14152.46 up by 222.7 points or by 1.6%. Reliance Industries Ltd. (Rs. 1082.20,+4.42%), Bharat Petroleum Corporation Ltd. (Rs. 377.15,+2.61%), Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Ltd. (Rs. 269.10,+1.53%), Indian Oil Corporation Ltd. (Rs. 156.85,+1.10%), Oil And Natural Gas Corporation Ltd. (Rs. 159.05,+0.89%),.

On the flip side, Realty index was at 2089.56 down by -24.08 points or by -1.14%. Oberoi Realty Ltd. (Rs. 475.00,-2.93%), Indiabulls Real Estate Ltd. (Rs. 155.80,-2.44%), Prestige Estates Projects Ltd. (Rs. 271.25,-1.31%), DLF Ltd. (Rs. 191.00,-0.52%), Phoenix Mills Ltd. (Rs. 652.00,-0.34%),.

The Market breadth, indicating the overall strength of the market, was weak. On BSE out of total shares traded 2958 , shares advanced were 1246 while 1532 shares declined and 180 were unchanged.
